How Student Travel Works as a Recruitment & Retention Tool in Your Performing Arts Program

How Student Travel Works as a Recruitment & Retention Tool in your Performing Arts Program

When directors think about student travel, they often focus on the educational and performance opportunities a tour provides. While those benefits are certainly important, student travel can also be one of the most effective recruitment and retention tools available for music, dance, and theatre programs. A well-planned tour gives students something exciting to work toward, creates a strong sense of community, and helps demonstrate the value of participation to both students and their families.

For prospective students, hearing about performance opportunities, workshops with industry professionals, and travel experiences can be incredibly motivating. Whether it’s performing at a renowned venue, participating in a Broadway workshop, or exploring a new city with their peers, travel provides experiences that students simply can’t replicate in the classroom. When current students return from tour sharing stories, photos, and memories, younger students often begin imagining themselves having those same experiences in the future. In many programs, tours become a tradition that students look forward to long before they’re eligible to participate.

Student travel is equally valuable when it comes to retention. The relationships formed while traveling together often strengthen the bonds students have with their ensemble, troupe, or company. Shared experiences create a deeper sense of belonging and investment in the program, encouraging students to stay involved year after year. While students may not remember every rehearsal or concert they participated in, they will remember performing alongside their friends in a new destination, learning from professionals, and creating memories that last long after graduation. For many performing arts programs, those experiences become the foundation of a strong program culture—and a powerful reason for students to stay engaged.
